What if a startup born in a university lab could help us see the ground beneath our feet in entirely new ways?
This month, that question moved from the realm of possibility to practical progress.
QASR Technologies—a deep-tech company founded by Dr. Ahmad Abushaikha and spun out of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)—has signed a 12-month strategic collaboration with Qatar Shell. Their shared mission: harness the power of artificial intelligence to transform subsurface reservoir analysis in the oil and gas sector.
QASR, incubated at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), has been quietly preparing for exactly this kind of challenge. The startup’s AI-powered simulation tools are built to make pressure and flow data not just readable—but meaningful, swift, and field-ready.
The partnership, led by the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre (QSRTC), aims higher than performance alone. It is anchored in purpose.
“We are investing in local talent and creating new opportunities for innovation to thrive,” said Misfer Al Bidaiwi, Vice President of Pearl GTL at Qatar Shell.
Dr. Abushaikha, Founder and CEO of QASR, sees the collaboration as a turning point not just for his company—but for Qatar’s broader knowledge economy.
“This partnership highlights what’s possible when academic research is given room to grow,” he said. “We are proud to represent the kind of homegrown innovation that can deliver real, measurable impact—and redefine what’s next for the energy sector.”
At QSTP, this is more than a partnership. It is a signal that research can lead to results. That startups can scale from within and that the future of energy doesn’t need to be imported. It can be imagined here. Built here. And shaped by those bold enough to lead it.
