As part of Autism Awareness Month, we speak with Dr. Wamuyu Owotoki, CEO of Xaidi, a startup incubated at QSTP, a member of Qatar Foundation. Xaidi is an AI-powered health and life coaching platform designed to support neurodivergent individuals and their caregivers, combining personalized guidance, culturally relevant content, and integration with real-world care systems to rethink how neurodevelopmental support can be delivered at scale. With an estimated 15–20% of the global population identified as neurodivergent, and growing recognition of autism and neurodevelopmental needs across Qatar and the wider region, access to continuous, culturally relevant support remains a critical challenge.

Key Takeaways
  • Neurodevelopmental care remains fragmented, with limited access to continuous, culturally relevant support
  • AI can extend care beyond clinical settings into everyday life
  • Hybrid models combining digital tools and human expertise are essential
  • Scalable infrastructure is critical to addressing global access gaps
Q&A
What inspired the founding of Xaidi?

Xaidi was born out of a clear and urgent gap in global healthcare. An estimated 15–20% of the world’s population is neurodivergent, yet access to structured, reliable support remains limited and often fragmented.

The idea took shape during a research project in Kenya during the COVID-19 pandemic, where mothers of neurodivergent children shared concerns about their children regressing due to the loss of in-person therapy. Their need for continuous, accessible support became the catalyst for Xaidi.

Founded alongside an experienced, multidisciplinary team, Xaidi was built to provide more than just information. It is designed as an AI-powered health and life coach that is both scientifically grounded and culturally attuned to the families it serves.

How does Xaidi address gaps in autism and neurodevelopmental care?

One of the most significant gaps in care today is what happens between clinical visits. Families are often left to navigate complex care journeys on their own, with limited access to reliable, context-specific guidance.

Xaidi addresses this by acting as a continuous support layer, offering 24/7 access to scientifically validated, culturally relevant information. It supports early development, empowers families with practical guidance, and helps reduce stigma by extending knowledge beyond the individual to caregivers, educators, and wider support networks.

At the same time, the platform ensures continuity of care through features such as reminders for therapy, medication, and daily routines, helping families maintain consistency outside clinical environments.

How does Xaidi use AI differently from traditional digital health tools?

Xaidi’s approach to AI is built around what it defines as an “empathic AI hybrid solution.” Unlike generic chatbots, the platform is specifically designed for neurodivergent care, combining contextual intelligence with cultural awareness.

The system operates across multiple languages, including Arabic, English, German, Somali and Swahili, ensuring accessibility across diverse communities. More importantly, it integrates a human-in-the-loop model, connecting users with therapists, community networks, and professional support when needed.

This combination of AI-driven guidance and real-world integration ensures that support is not only personalized, but also practical and actionable.

How does the platform support caregivers navigating complex care journeys?

Caregiver burnout is a significant and often overlooked challenge in neurodevelopmental care. Xaidi was intentionally designed to support caregivers as much as the individuals they care for.

By providing reliable, always-available guidance, the platform reduces the cognitive and emotional burden on families, helping them make more informed decisions with confidence. Its multilingual and culturally adapted content also enables caregivers to involve extended family members and educators, strengthening the overall support system.

In addition, Xaidi offers expert-developed training content, equipping caregivers with the tools and knowledge needed to manage daily care more effectively.

How important is integration with local services in creating effective care pathways?

Integration with local care systems is fundamental. Xaidi is built on the principle that AI should enhance, not replace, human care.

Through the platform, users can connect directly with therapists, community organizations, and support networks. This ensures that when needs go beyond digital guidance, families can transition seamlessly to in-person care.

By linking digital support with real-world services, Xaidi creates a more cohesive and responsive care pathway, reducing fragmentation and improving overall outcomes.

How does Xaidi scale as digital infrastructure across healthcare and education systems?

While direct-to-consumer platforms have limited reach, Xaidi is designed to operate as scalable digital infrastructure through partnerships with healthcare providers, institutions, and governments.

Its adaptable model allows organizations to integrate the platform into existing systems, extending their ability to deliver support without requiring additional physical resources. This enables institutions to expand access to care while maintaining local relevance and cultural sensitivity.

By embedding itself within healthcare and education ecosystems, Xaidi can significantly extend the reach and impact of neurodevelopmental support services.

What challenges and milestones have shaped your journey so far?

Building in the healthcare space comes with inherent complexity, from navigating multiple stakeholders to ensuring scientific credibility and trust. Securing early-stage funding and developing an AI system that meets both technological and clinical standards have been key challenges.

At the same time, several milestones have validated the journey. One of the most significant milestones has been graduating from the Google for Startups Growth Academy (AI for Health) and successfully launching the platform in 2024.

What impact are you seeing today, and how do you see the future of AI in this space?

The impact of Xaidi is most visible in the everyday experiences of families. Parents have reported meaningful progress in their children’s development, supported by consistent therapy and accessible guidance through the platform.

In more immediate situations, the platform has helped caregivers navigate sensitive, high-stress moments by providing clear, structured guidance in real time. These interactions demonstrate how technology can transform complex care challenges into manageable processes.

Looking ahead, AI is set to become foundational to neurodevelopmental care, enabling continuous, accessible, and culturally relevant support at scale. By moving from fragmented systems to integrated, proactive care models, platforms like Xaidi have the potential to significantly improve outcomes for millions of families worldwide.

Why did you choose to build and grow Xaidi within Qatar and QSTP, and how has the ecosystem supported your journey so far?

QSTP has played a key role in Xaidi’s growth by providing access to a strong innovation ecosystem, strategic partnerships, and institutional support. As a leading hub for deep tech and innovation, it aligns closely with Xaidi’s focus on AI-driven healthcare solutions.
