Here are six lessons I learned during my first week at Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP):

Lesson One: The Importance of Listening

Throughout the meetings I attended last week, I observed how the team engages with one another. Before sharing ideas, suggestions, or even frustrations, everyone takes the time to fully understand the context and the different perspectives in the room. I realized that listening isn’t just about staying quiet. It helps you shape your thoughts and make your contributions more meaningful.

Lesson Two: Being in The Right Room

Having the chance to attend meetings with external partners and customers exposed me to opportunities I wouldn’t normally see from a classroom lens. Seeing how QSTP connects with affiliated entities and ecosystem players opened my eyes to areas I personally find interesting and would like to upskill in. It reminded me that sometimes growth comes from simply being in the right rooms and paying attention.

Lesson Three: Internal Shadowing Across Teams

Spending time observing different departments, including communications, innovation, operations, and marketing, helped me understand how everything connects behind the scenes. Each team approaches challenges differently, yet all contribute to the same larger goal. It gave me a broader appreciation for how cross-functional collaboration actually works in practice.

Lesson Four: Ask Questions

No one discovers anything by staying silent. Asking questions helped me better understand QSTP’s work environment and connect with team members. Pretending to know everything may look confident, but asking questions is what truly builds understanding, clarity, and stronger relationships.

Lesson Five: How to Present Myself

First impressions matter. I saw this clearly in startup pitches, partnership meetings, and even in my own interactions. The way you present yourself, verbally and nonverbally, communicates a lot before you even start speaking. It sets the tone for how seriously others take your message. Presentation is a powerful tool that can strengthen what you say or weaken it before it even lands.

Lesson Six: “Impact” Is Said at Least 20 Times a Day

At QSTP, it’s not just about generating ideas and executing them; it’s about whether our work creates real value for us and for the wider ecosystem. Measuring outcomes is far more important than simply checking boxes, and that’s something I genuinely noticed throughout my first week.

One week down, many more lessons to go!
