POWERED BY FANARA decade ago, suggesting that a child in the Zaatari refugee camp could access the same quality education as a student at an elite Palo Alto prep school would’ve been unthinkable. Today, in a deep tech world of AI, large language models (LLMs), machine translation, computer vision, and big data, we have the technology to make it happen.
That’s the promise of precision education, where learning and education converge with AI, data, and deep tech to meet students exactly where they are, regardless of geography, status, or circumstance. It leverages the technology that’s already transforming our world—and that carries the potential to either narrow or widen the education access gap in our societies—to build learning systems that work for each student’s reality.
These realities include the child in a refugee camp whose parents are illiterate and can’t help with homework. Another that’s living in Doha or Dubai, raised by a caregiver who doesn’t speak Arabic and has a hard time navigating cultural norms. A child coming from privilege, but who grew up without exposure to the lived experience of disadvantaged communities. Or one with learning needs whose school can’t accommodate, or worse, isn’t aware of those needs in the first place. Most education systems funnel these children through the same curriculum and at the same pace, then wonder why so many fall through the cracks.
Precision education starts with a different premise: what if education could be adaptable to where each student actually begins?
The tech is there. LLMs can create content, provide instant feedback, and explain any topic at virtually every learning level. Machine translation enables real-time multilingual education. Computer vision and AR/VR can bring classrooms and immersive learning experiences anywhere. Smart robotics can make prototyping accessible at an early age. Combined with edge computing and cloud infrastructure, these tools can reach students on basic devices with limited connectivity. Most importantly, the cost curve for deep tech is going down while innovation and performance accelerate.
Precision education comes to life when you combine tech with data about students’ circumstances and smart systems that connect learners with the right people and resources for their stage and place. It means drawing from tradition and how our communities pass down knowledge, and building assessments that measure real understanding, timed to each student’s progress rather than arbitrary schedules. And it means rooting curricula in local contexts, like teaching environmental science through ecological challenges students can observe in their own communities.
EdTech startups are uniquely positioned to make this happen. They can move fast, iterate based on what works, and scale their solutions globally. The best ones are combining AI and data with genuine impact metrics. They’re building platforms that reach students in refugee camps as easily as major cities, creating tools that work on low-bandwidth connections and aging devices.
But edTech startups can’t do it alone. Like precision medicine, precision education requires a systems approach. It also requires an adoption framework that includes:
- A strong commitment to putting students in the driver’s seat of their education, enabling them to unleash their curiosity.
- A way to recognize a student’s innate, unique passion, and design and deploy curriculum to nurture that passion and set up the student for success.
- Building data sets from nuanced, localized, and non-traditional sources that feed LLMs that can teach across contexts.
- Human-in-the-loop processes for the first set of iterations that guide and ensure models work effectively.
- A place-based education curriculum that brings in relevant, active, multisensory engagement.
- And importantly, guardrails for AI that secure data, protect students’ privacy, and ensure the integrity of generative content.
For AI and technology to meet their potential for education, we must lay the foundation for scale while ensuring each child is at the center of a tailored learning experience. Our mission at QSTP is to ignite the potential of precision education.
