POWERED BY FANARAcross the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region, water is not a background concern. It is a daily operational reality, a geopolitical pressure point, and increasingly, a measure of how seriously governments and industries take their long-term survival. In Qatar, where a desert climate leaves virtually no margin for inefficiency, the question of how to manage, recover, and rethink water use is not abstract. It is urgent.
The WaterTech Accelerator, launched by Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) in partnership with TotalEnergies, is built to support startups addressing the full spectrum of water challenges, from efficiency and loss reduction to reuse, pollution detection, and sustainable generation. It also connects them with strategic partners, scaling support, and clear pathways to pilot projects across Qatar and the wider WANA region.
Yousef Al-Jaber, TotalEnergies’ Vice President of Innovation, is candid about the state of the field. “Some technologies for water management have matured, creating an opportunity to rethink how we approach it. Many existing solutions are well established and have been in use for years. TotalEnergies can play a key role in encouraging new approaches, such as applying artificial intelligence to water processing and leak detection. This is how we aim to drive new approaches and help elevate the industry to a new level,” he explains.
For participating startups, success is measured not only by technological development but also by the ability to reimagine the field. “We expect participants to think outside the box and explore innovative applications for technologies that may not have been used in water management or leak detection before.” says Al-Jaber.
Access to expertise and operational insight is a central component of the program. As Al-Jaber explains, “In terms of operation and expertise, that’s what we bring to the table. We will answer their questions and be open to discuss our operations, their expectations, and our expectations, and try to match that during the program.”
The WaterTech Accelerator aligns with TotalEnergies’ global commitment to sustainability. Water management is not only operationally significant but also part of a broader environmental strategy. “Water is integral to our industry. We work with produced water, seawater, and other sources. Developing new technologies and innovative solutions for water is key to reducing our footprint and advancing sustainable operations,” he adds.
QSTP provides the ideal environment for this initiative. With a long-standing track record of supporting innovation and a strong network of partners, the park offers startups the infrastructure, mentorship, and connections necessary for growth. Al-Jaber likens the partnership to planting a seed in fertile soil. “Qatar offers the perfect conditions for water innovation. The country’s water-stressed desert climate makes efficient water management a priority. QSTP brings the organizational structure and ecosystem needed to bring ideas to the market, while the region itself serves as a living laboratory for testing and deploying these technologies. In addition, this initiative reflects TotalEnergies’ approach of working alongside local partners and innovation ecosystems to develop practical, long-term solutions tailored to regional challenges. It also aligns with Qatar’s broader ambitions around sustainability and resource efficiency under Qatar National Vision 2030.”
In closing, Al-Jaber stresses the importance of creativity and ambition. “This accelerator is about innovation. Participants must focus on pushing boundaries and thinking boldly. We aim to provide the best conditions for startups to prosper, and we may even offer financial support in addition to technical guidance. The goal is to drive the industry toward new heights, and we believe that together, we can achieve that.”
The QSTP x TotalEnergies WaterTech Accelerator reflects a focused effort to support the development and deployment of practical water solutions. By bringing together industry expertise, startup innovation, and access to real operating environments, the program is designed to help promising technologies move beyond concept and into application. As the deadline approaches, it offers a timely opportunity for startups to engage with real industry challenges and contribute to advancing more efficient and sustainable water management practices in Qatar and the wider WANA region.
